A personal reflection on fertility, loss, and the many ways reproductive journeys can unfold. 🤍
I have hesitated to share this part of my story because fertility, pregnancy, and loss are deeply personal experiences.
I can only speak from my own experience. I do not speak on behalf of other women, people experiencing infertility, those who have experienced miscarriage, or anyone navigating their own reproductive journey. Each experience is shaped by unique circumstances, identities, bodies, relationships, and hopes.
As a cisgender, body-able woman, my own reproductive journey included fertility challenges, a miscarriage, a successful pregnancy through IVF, and later, a natural conception despite doctors having previously expressed that conceiving naturally would be unlikely.
Living through these experiences brought a complexity of emotions—hope, uncertainty, grief, vulnerability, frustration, anger, gratitude, and sometimes questions without easy answers. It also changed the way I understand reproductive mental health.
These experiences reminded me that fertility and pregnancy are never simply medical events. They can affect our relationship with our bodies, our sense of identity, our relationships, our expectations for the future, and our emotional wellbeing.
It is important to remember that there is no "right" way to feel on a fertility journey. Hope and disappointment, gratitude and grief, strength and vulnerability can all exist side by side. If your emotions feel strong, unfamiliar, or difficult to make sense of, know that this does not mean you are doing anything wrong. You are navigating something deeply personal and meaningful, and there is room for whatever emotions arise along the way. Wherever you are today, I invite you to pause for a moment, take a gentle breath, and offer yourself the same compassion you would extend to a dear friend. Sometimes, the most powerful act is simply acknowledging the complexity of this journey and meeting yourself with kindness as you move through it, one step at a time. 💛
My own fertility journey has allowed me to develop a deeper empathy for people navigating fertility challenges, perinatal mental health experiences, pregnancy loss, and the uncertainty that can accompany them. Not because I know what someone else is experiencing. I don’t. But because my own experiences have given me a deeper appreciation for the vulnerability, uncertainty, hope, and grief that can be part of these journeys.
Rather, I understand something about what it can mean to live with uncertainty, to hold hope alongside fear, and to experience grief in the midst of wanting something deeply.
I bring that awareness into my work as a counsellor—not as a substitute for understanding another person's experience, but as a reminder to approach each story with humility, curiosity, and compassion.
Sometimes there isn't a lesson or a neat ending.
Sometimes what we need most is simply a space where our experience can be held without judgment, comparison, or expectation.
🤍
